"Pour the golden water of recognition into the bucket of the human heart." I don't know who originally said these words, but I think it is a beautiful sentiment. On the other hand, I cannot help but feel that the concept of "recognition" has taken on a life of its own these days. Structurally, recognition is supposed to be deeply objective; it refers to the external world—like society or an organization—accepting others into its own rules and values. Looking at social media in recent years, however, it seems to function more as a powerful, subjective emotional urge: "I want someone to accept my existence."
"I want to be accepted just as I am." How selfish a desire. For it demands that others let you into their boundaries, regardless of their own preferences. How arrogant. For it operates on the illusion that everything can be erased with a single click. How fragile. For it fails to realize that it is nothing more than a house of cards.
